MATTHEW'S WEEKLY CHORE

Help Dad Set Up Our Own Email Server for Our Family Projects!

Welcome to mgachieve.com - Matthew's achievement tracking and project management site

The Problem

We have several companies and projects, which means we have lots of email accounts (10-20). Last month, we spent $280 just on email! That's money we could use for your game development tools or other cool stuff. We need our own email server to save money and have more control.

The Solution We Need

  • Our own email server that we can host on a cloud platform
  • Easy to set up and manage (minimal coding required)
  • Ability to handle multiple domains and email accounts without extra costs
  • A unified inbox for managing multiple email accounts
  • Web-based interface for accessing emails
  • Calendar and other helpful features
  • Reliable delivery and reception of emails
  • Strong security features to protect our emails

Important Things to Consider

Key Terms to Know

SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - the system used for sending emails from one server to another.
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol - allows you to access your email from different devices while keeping everything in sync.
DNS Records
Special settings we need to configure so other email servers can find and trust our server.
SSL/TLS
Security protocols that encrypt our emails to keep them private and secure.

Starting Points for Research

  • iRedMail - An open-source mail server solution
  • Mail-in-a-Box - An easy-to-deploy mail server
  • Mailcow - A more advanced but feature-rich mail server
  • Mailu - A simple-to-use mail server with a Docker setup
  • Cloud hosting providers: DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr

Remember to look for other options too!

Things to Avoid

  • Overly complex solutions that require deep Linux knowledge
  • Email server software without regular updates or community support
  • Hosting providers with poor uptime or slow servers
  • Ignoring important security features

Format for Your Findings

For each email server solution you find, please include:

  1. Name of the email server software
  2. Estimated setup time and difficulty
  3. Key features (especially unified inbox, webmail interface, calendar, etc.)
  4. Security features
  5. Recommended cloud hosting options and estimated monthly cost
  6. Any limitations on number of domains or email accounts
  7. Community support and documentation quality
  8. Your thoughts on whether it could work for us
